phase one : basic & applied biomedical sciences

phase i will continue with nine blocks of five weeks each consisting of respiratory, cardio-vascular, gastrointestinal, urogenital, musculoskeletal, central nervous, head & neck, haematology and immunology, and endocrine systems. teaching in these blocks will be organized with integration of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology based on clinical scenarios. there will be written and practical summative examination at the end of gastrointestinal and endocrine systems followed by four weeks of elective period before students’ progress to third year of phase ii program.

mbbs105 biomedical sciences in clinical context - respiratory system

this block aims to provide a basic understanding of normal structure and function of the respiratory system and pathology, microbiology, immunology, radiology, diagnosis and treatment and management of common respiratory diseases. it covers basic anatomy, cell biology, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, and microbiology.

mbbs106 biomedical sciences in clinical context - cardiovascular system

the cardiovascular system block focuses on the heart and vasculature. this block aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the structure and function of the various components of the cardiovascular system, followed by how these structures and functions can go wrong in a few common cardiovascular diseases.

mbbs107 biomedical sciences in clinical context - gastrointestinal system

the gastrointestinal system block focuses on the gastrointestinal tract and its associated structures like the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. the block starts with a comprehensive survey of the structure and function of the various components of the gastrointestinal system followed by how these structures and functions can go wrong in a few common gastrointestinal diseases. this block aims to provide a basic understanding of normal structure and function of the gastrointestinal system and pathology, microbiology, immunology, radiology, diagnosis and treatment and management of common gastrointestinal diseases.

mbbs201 biomedical sciences in clinical context - urogenital system

the urogenital system block utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to cover the fundamental knowledge covering the structure, function, and pathogenesis of urogenital system.

mbbs202 biomedical sciences in clinical context - musculoskeletal system

the musculoskeletal system block focuses on the limbs and the back. in this system block, students will start with a comprehensive survey of the structure and function of the various components of the musculoskeletal components of the limbs and the back. the pathogenesis and management of common musculoskeletal conditions will be discussed in lectures, as well as in team-based learning and practical sessions.

mbbs203 biomedical sciences in clinical context - nervous system

the nervous system block focuses on the nerves and neuronal network which make up the central and peripheral nervous systems. in this system block, students will learn a comprehensive treatment of the anatomy of central and peripheral nervous system structures, followed by the physiology and pathophysiology of the central and peripheral nervous system. throughout the block, we will also explore the drugs used to modulate nervous system function in the treatment of disease.

mbbs204 biomedical sciences in clinical context - head & neck system

the head & neck system block aims to provide the knowledge on the structure and function of different parts of the head, neck and skin; the derangement of the various structures in the head, neck and skin in common diseases affecting them; the mechanisms of some common symptoms and signs of head, neck and skin diseases; the principles of the medical and surgical management of some common diseases affecting head, neck and skin.

mbbs205 biomedical sciences in clinical context - haematology & immunology system

the hematology and immunology (h/i) block focuses on fluid connective tissue, blood, which is dynamic perfusion of vasculature with specialized cells in plasma. definition of hematology is the study of blood and its related diseases, whereas immunology is the study of the immune system. in this system block, an overview of the structure and function of h/i systems and the consequences of dysfunction of the h/i system and its related diseases and strategies of treatments against h/i systems would be discussed.

mbbs206 biomedical sciences in clinical context - endocrine system

the endocrine system block focuses on the normal functions of the endocrine systems and the diseases that occur as a result of disorders of endocrine function. in this system block, students will learn about the anatomy, histology and the physiology of the endocrine system. students will also learn about the importance of calcium, vitamin d and glucose regulation by the endocrine system. they will study the involvement of hormones in development and growth and how adipose tissues contribute to hormone release. in addition, they will learn about clinical features of several hormonal disorders. lastly, they will study the general and pharmacological management of common endocrine disorders.
